On This Day: 2003 Rovers Signed ???

14th July hasn’t been a very busy day for Rovers over the past 2 decades and that doesn’t look set to change with Dominic Samuel’s transfer still dragging on.

But on the 14th July 2003, Rovers signed a long-haired Italian from Rangers for £1.4 Million. Yes, it’s Lorenzo Amoruso.

Amoruso came with so much promise and hope, he was bought to replace the Henning Berg who went the other way. Graeme Souness made the 32-year-old Italian his prime target that year and was determined to do whatever it took to get him to come to Ewood Park.

Amoruso rewarded Souness, by scoring on his debut against Wolves in a 5-1 win. He would then score just 2 games later, in a 3-2 loss to Manchester City. By November 2003, he had played all 9 games and become one of the first players on the team sheet. In November 2003 he suffered a Knee injury, which caused him to miss a game against Charlton. He returned for a UEFA Cup game, but then was forced to miss the next game against Leeds. Surgery would then rule him out until March 2004, he would play the final 5 games of and scoring his 3rd of the season.

In the 2004/05 season, he found games even harder to come by. Graeme Souness had been replaced by Mark Hughes, more injury problems and a red card against Manchester United, meaning he only managed 7 games that season.

Amoruso played no part in 2005/06 and was then released in the summer.
